Board Retention Best Practices

I work with a small arts nonprofit in Texas. We are changing our bylaws to expand the size of our board and recruit more active board members. Currently board members serve for 2 years and then sit off the board for at least 1 year. Our board would like to recruit a few, high quality, high performing board members and change this 2 years on 1 year off policy so that board members can stay on as long as they choose to and as long as they are passing an annual performance review conducted by the board. Does anyone have similar bylaws in your organization that you would be willing to share as an example? Also, how has this policy worked for your organization and would you recommend it?  Thanks so much!
