If the nonprofit is reporting information itself, how do you make sure it is accurate?
At this time GuideStar does not independently verify information submitted through the Profile Program. We simply don’t have the capacity to do so at the scale and speed of the information that’s being shared. Everything is publicly displayed and we have acted in the past to remove false information and revoke the GuideStar Seal of Transparency – on a case by case basis. We also ask nonprofits to share their independently conducted evaluation reports on GuideStar, if they are available.
In the future we believe there is an exciting opportunity for professional evaluators and auditors to conduct “impact auditing” or an “impact certification” process that could be enabled by Platinum. As a data-hub, we’re also looking at approaches that use statistical techniques on large data sets to pick up trends and anomalies.
This is an important issue and we welcome your input and ideas on this topic.
