How to Use The GuideStar National Nonprofit Directory

The GuideStar National Nonprofit Directory includes three filter groups:

Geography, Organization and Financials.  

All filters mirror a "GuideStar Premium" user experience.


The Geography filter allows a user to filter a search by States, Metro Statistical Areas (MSAs), cities and counties.  The Geography search filters are responsive to the state(s) selected, after selecting a state, users will only be able to select MSAs, cities and counties within the selected state(s).



Using the Organization filter group allows users to filter by the GuideStar Profile Seal Level (all are shown by default), Cause Area (NTEE Codes), Sub-cause Area, and Affiliation Type.  The Revoked, Defunct or Merged filters may be pre-selected, each organization who hosts the National Directory can choose to include these filters and users may not be able to toggle them on and off.


Alternatively, a user can search for a nonprofit organization by typing a Name, EIN, or Keyword into the search bar at the top of the screen at any time.




The final filter group is the Financial filter. Several options are also available to limit searches by Revenue (990), Total Expenses and Total Assets. Users can adjust the search by using the slider bar marked by the red arrow or enter exact amounts. To enter the specific dollar limits, users must hover their mouse over $0 and max to make a text box appear. Click within the text box to enter the desired search criteria and set a Min/Max value for the search.


Tip: users may simply type “100K” or “3m” rather than type out all the zeros in 100,000 and 3,000,000 respectively.



Researching Individual Organizations

After performing a search, a list of nonprofit organizations will return that match the desired criteria. This list includes organization names, locations, GuideStar Seals, EIN, affiliation, and a section of the organization’s mission statement. Users can review an organization’s GuideStar Nonprofit Profile page by clicking on the desired organization name.



Users will have access to view all available Form 990’s for the organization.



Users can navigate to specific sections of the profile by using the tabs along the top banner (Summary, Programs + Results, Financials, and Operations). These tabs lock at the top of the page; users can scroll down in their web browser but will always see these tabs at the top of the page.




All Nonprofit Profile updates must be made by going to Changes made on will auto populate to all organizations accessing GuideStar data.
