  <geographic_areas_served_narrative>As the world's largest source of information on nonprofit organizations, GuideStar's information is readily availablevia GuideStar's website and our 170 data distribution network partners whenever and wherever donors, funders, researchers, nonprofits, media, and other partners need this resource to make more informed decisions and strengthen their charitable giving.

For the 12 months ending in October 2015, more than 6.9 million unique visitors to www.GuideStar.org accessed information on more than 2.4 million tax-exempt organizations from across the nation. Since 2008, more than 115,000 of those nonprofits have enhanced the IRS-provided data with information about their impact, governance, and programs through their GuideStar Nonprofit Profiles.
</geographic_areas_served_narrative>
  <impact_statement>Between October 2014 and October 2015, www.GuideStar.org had 6.9 million unique visitors, including donors, nonprofit leaders and staff, grantmakers, people who provide services to nonprofits, journalists, government officials, and academic researchers. GuideStar provided the public with information on more than 2.4 million US tax-exempt organizations; this information included 8.6 million IRS Form 990 images. The vast majority (99.9%) of GuideStar users leveraged GuideStar information and tools at no charge, thanks to generous support through grants, foundations, membership, sales, and donations.

GuideStar also increased the reach of our platform for updating Nonprofit Profiles, enabling nonprofits to share their organization's full, and most up-to-date story. As of September 2015, more than 115,000 nonprofits had updated some portion of their profile since the program began in 2008 demonstrating their commitment to transparency. Additionally, GuideStar has developed a Data Distribution Network with more than 170 partners allowing the most current nonprofit information to be shared with donors on multiple platforms, including AmazonSmile, VolunteerMatch, and the donor advised funds of Fidelity, Schwab, and Vanguard.
</impact_statement>
  <ceo_comments>The first revolution of nonprofit transparency was quite simple: nonprofit transparency can help drive nonprofit accountability. Nineteen years ago, GuideStar led this revolution by making nonprofit tax forms available to the public.

Now, it is time to complete a second revolution: nonprofit transparency that drives nonprofit effectiveness. GuideStar can build the information scaffolding for social change; can help ensure that the nonprofit sector is capable of tackling the great challenges of our time.

In the U.S., the nonprofit sector accounts for almost $2 trillion in economic activity and employs nearly 10% of the workforce. The sector's reach into the lives of communities is deep, lasting, and multi-faceted. But, for us to create the thriving society we all imagine, nonprofits need to step up our collective game. We need to squeeze more impact out of our work and our role, acting like a thriving archipelago, not a mere collection of islands.

There are four drivers of greater impact: (1) more giving the financial capital that fuels the work of nonprofits; (2) smarter giving a system that rewards performance; (3) reduced waste less redundancy, busy work, and distraction; and (4) higher performance/effectiveness. The essence of GuideStar's opportunity is this: the organization of data can strengthen every one of the factors that lead to social impact.

The opportunity before us is greater than just the linear application of a handful of inputs or outputs.  Here we are talking about no less than the creation of a new kind of nonprofit sector: a community powered by information, characterized by smart decisions, open feedback, and efficient learning. This is an opportunity to upgrade the information scaffolding of social change.

I believe GuideStar can, and will, provide the key scaffolding data, information, and knowledge to enable effective philanthropy: better giving decisions, more effective programs, and measurable impact.</ceo_comments>

    <bio>Jacob Harold is a social change strategist, grantmaker, and author. Jacob came to GuideStar from the Hewlett Foundation, where he led grantmaking for the Philanthropy Program. Between 2006 and 2012, he oversaw $30 million in grants that, together, aimed to build a 21st-century infrastructure for smart giving.

Before that, Jacob worked as a consultant to nonprofits and foundations at the Bridgespan Group and as a climate change strategist for the David and Lucile Packard Foundation based at The Energy and Resources Institute in New Delhi, India. At the beginning of his career he worked as a climate change campaigner for Rainforest Action Network and Greenpeace USA and as organizing director at Citizen Works.

Jacob has written extensively on climate change and philanthropic strategy. His essays have been used as course materials at Stanford, Duke, Wharton, Harvard, and Oxford. He earned an AB summa cum laude from Duke University and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business with a certificate in public management. Jacob has further training from Green Corps in grassroots organizing, Bain in business strategy, the Chinese Academy of Sciences in complex systems science, and the School for International Training in Tibetan studies. He was born and raised in Winston-Salem, NC, where his parents ran small community-based nonprofit organizations.</bio>

      <program_description>Through our free website, data services, and software products, GuideStar offers tools to help individuals and organizations make better, more confident decisions. Our free website, data services, and software products ultimately increase the impact of all philanthropy. In 2014, 350,000 easily searchable, digitized nonprofit records were added to the GuideStar database, increasing the total number to more than 4.5 million.

The vast majority (99.9%) of GuideStar users leverage GuideStar data and tools at no charge, thanks to generous support received through grants, foundations, membership, sales, and donations. GuideStar allows users to be more informed donors, giving them access to more than just IRS Form 990 data.

People with in-depth data needs use GuideStar products in order to increase their effectiveness and efficiency. GuideStar continues to invest in new services and tools to meet changing market demands. Examples  are our development of and updates to Financial SCAN, an comprehensive financial comparative tool used to understand, analyze, and communicate a nonprofits financial story, and our Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), which allow GuideStar nonprofit information to be shared with a larger Data Distribution Network. </program_description>

      <program_description>GuideStar believes that the more people understand about the philanthropic sector, the more effectively and efficiently it will operate and the more support it will receive. GuideStar creates value by using advanced information technology to make more information about nonprofits available to the public, donors, foundations, nonprofits, government agencies, and service providers. In 2014, GuideStar enabled users of www.GuideStar.org to obtain some level of information on more than 2.4 million tax-exempt organizations, including 8.6 million 990 images. GuideStar also increased the reach of our platform for updating Nonprofit Profiles, enabling nonprofits to share their organizations full and most up-to-date story. From 2008 through September 2015, more than 115,000 nonprofits have provided information about their programs, finances, and impact in their GuideStar Nonprofit Profile. More than 45,000 nonprofits have updated information within the most recent two years. </program_description>

      <program_name>Encouraging Charitable Giving</program_name>
      <program_description>The philanthropic sector relies on public interest and trust in nonprofit organizations to encourage charitable giving. GuideStar builds public trust through the nonprofit information it provides online. Information includes exempt and legal statuses, finances, and compensation practices of nonprofits pulled from the publicly available IRS Forms 990 and from more updated, in-depth information provided directly to GuideStar by nonprofit managers. Through these profiles, nonprofits have increased access to donations; more than 20,000 nonprofits have chosen to collect donations through GuideStar.org.

GuideStar supports community foundations in their fundraising efforts through its DonorEdge platform. In 2015 there were 18 community foundation members using this service.

GuideStar is also developing new tools to ensure that nonprofit information is available to donors wherever and whenever they need it. This is facilitated by the development and launch of several Application Programing Interfaces (APIs) in 2014. These APIs share GuideStars nonprofit information across the digital world. Our distribution partners including VolunteerMatch, AmazonSmile, and the donor advised funds of Fidelity, Schwab, and Vanguard are using GuideStar APIs to ensure donors have the most up-to-date, complete information about nonprofits. </program_description>

With more information available, donors are more informed and can be more effective in their charitable giving leading to increased giving and impact.</long_term_success>
      <short_term_success>In 2015 there were 18 community foundation members using the DonorEdge service. In 2015, donors were able to engage with GuideStar information, from more than 170 digital distribution partners, as well as GuideStar.org.</short_term_success>
